St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College at a glance
St Paul’s Millennium Medical College, as it is known today, was established through a decree of the Council of Ministers in 2010, although the medical school opened in 2007 and the hospital was established in 1968 by the late Emperor Haile Selassie. It is governed by a board under the Federal Ministry of Health. The College initiated Ethiopia’s first integrated modular and hybrid problem-based curriculum for its undergraduate medical education, and is currently expanding to postgraduate programs and diversifying its undergraduate program offerings. St Paul’s is in the process of building its capacity quickly in a short period of time, growing from 3 to 250 faculty members in the last six years, and expanding teaching facilities. The college has more than 2800 clinical, academic and administrative and support staffs that provide medical specialty services to patients who are referred from all over the country, teaching medicine and nursing students and doing basic and applied researches. While the inpatient capacity is more than 700 beds, The College sees an average of 1200 emergency and outpatient clients daily.
St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College provides healthcare and training to its students through its different biomedical and clinical departments, including Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Public health, Pathology, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and child health, Emergency Medicine, Urology, Neurology, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery, Radiology, Anesthesiology, Nursing, ICU (Intensive Care Unit), ART (HIV care), Endoscopy, Physiotherapy, Laboratory and Pharmacy.
St. Paul’s Postgraduate programs, particularly the specialty programs are designed to be competency based. Given the infancy of the Medical College, its swift expansion and innovative approach, the College is facing multiple obstacles. Many programs are experiencing a small shortage of faculty, while there is expert scarcity in several departments. In addition, while new staff are well selected and have excellent knowledge and skills, some require improvement in the less familiar aspects of their job, such as leading competency based teaching, running integrated curricula and conducting research. One of St. Paul’s core values is student-centered teaching, and as such mentorship programs have begun, which are very good and continue to strengthen. The college’s approach uses a combination of didactics, use of skills/simulation labs, actual attachment with patients for practical teaching and community attachments. Student assessments, particularly for postgraduates, are made by many staff including nurses and other health professionals.
The number and capacity of medical schools is massively expanding in the country while the post graduate programs remain very few, so the need to focus on expanding postgraduate programs is based on this perceived need.Based on its Balanced Score Card Strategic plan, St. Paul’s has created a vision of becoming a Medical University with a prestigious academic and research center, and sought after medical care. For this, St. Paul’s has identified three strategic themes which are: Excellence in Teaching and Research, Excellence in Service Delivery and Excellence in Leadership and Governance.
